Markha Valley Trek

Every second enthusiastic trekker who plans to visit Leh, he opts for this Markha Valley. Markha is a river that starts at the junction of Langtang Chu and Nimaling Chu. The Markha River is a tributary river to Zanskar River. The Markha Valley flows in the Hemis National Park and somewhere between the Stok and Zanskar Mountain range. The Markha valley trekking is definitely one in all the foremost varied and exquisite treks in Ladakh Himalaya. The acclimatization gives you a boost to walk around normally. You experience the beauty of this trail while crossing the passes – Kongmaru La 5130 mts, Gandla 4875 mts and walking on the banks of the Markha River. The highlight of the trip is that the inhabitants at the base of the Kang-Yatse peak on the plains of Nimaling. A few days later the trek ends at the marvelous Hemis monastery. This is a route visit to self-disciplined & hospitable Hemis monastery that welcomes you back to the familiar world.

Day – 1: Delhi – Leh (Complete Rest in Leh for acclimatization)

You board on the early morning domestic flight for Leh. Our team receives you at airport. Our team leads you to the hotel and you take a complete relax for acclimatization as you are at 3500 mtr altitude. In the evening, you should go to local markets and experience this festive place. As Leh is located at high altitude, it gives you a pseudo day effect. You stay comfortably in the hotel overnight.

Day – 2: Leh – Spituk – Zingchen 4-6 hours

Level: Moderate- Easy
After the breakfast drive to Spituk Bridge behind the Spituk monastery, around 7 km from Leh town. Once you cross the bridge over the Indus River, you are on the trail. We drive to Spituk Village and further to this village, you walk through a green gorge and it gives you a sense of isolation. This is what you had been thinking about. You are in Zingchen and stay overnight in tents.

Day – 3: Zingchen to Yurutse 4-5 hours

Level: Moderate- Tough
Leave Zingchen for Rumbak through a straight forward road; you are about to enter Hemis National Park which is known for the preservation of Snow leopard, Baharal, marmot, wolf etc. You walk through a narrow trail and valley widens as you arrive Rumbak village. We pitch tents for overnight stay in Yurutse below Gandala Pass (4875 Mts).

Day – 4: Yurutse to Skyu 6-7 hrs.

Level: Tough
Post a healthy breakfast you walk the trail along the mountain side, followed by a crossing a small valley. This path is a zigzag but steep path. Sometimes it is easier to walk on zigzag path instead straight as it gives you better control. You experience crossing the first snowcapped mountain Gandala pass (4380m). Skyu village is at about 2-3 hrs walking distance from here. Once you descend towards Shingo, the trail leads you to the Markha Valley. We pitch tents for camping. You stay overnight in the camp.

Day – 5: Sku to Markha 7-8 hrs

Level: Moderate
Post a healthy breakfast, you are on the trail to Markha village. You take a green vegetative path on the right bank of the Markha River. You cross the right bank of the river followed by the barren plain. You have a stop over at Chaluk. Then you reach to Markha Village. In Markha Village, you stay either in camp or in Home Stay. Home Stay is an ancient way of hospitality around the globe. This is a bread earning way for the villagers in this adverse climatic geography. You have a real-time in-hand experience to learn the customs of living and sustainability. Every culture on this planet has its great extent to teach humanity. You experience the local Ladakhi – Tibetan cuisine.

Day – 6: Markha to Thachungtse 5-6 hrs.

Level: Tough
Following a warm see-off from your host family of villagers, you keep going on the trail towards via Hankar village. We pitch tent and supporting staff keep them busy in preparing fresh & tasty food. You have a calm and serene rest overnight.

Day – 7: Thachungtse to Nimaling 4-5 hrs.

Level: Easy
Today it is an easy trek. Nimaling Village is located at 4900 mtr. This village has a green pasture, where you see the shepherds and their flock of sheep, goats and yaks graze during the summer months. During this stretch you experience an amazing view of Mt. Kang Yatse (6400 mtr). Mount Kang Yatse is also known as Nimaling Peak. It is a little bit courageous to complete this Mt. Kang Yatse peak. You stay in the tented camp.

Day – 8: Nimaling to Shang Sumdo 6-7 hrs.

Level: Tough
Today you witness your 3rd snowcapped mountain pass i.e. Kongmaru La (5130 M). This trail goes through narrow gorges. You can view the Leh city from the top of the mountain. You see the expanding horizon of the Ladakh range including the villages. Further, you descend to reach Shang Village. We pitch tents and our team keeps them busy preparing food. You stay overnight in tents.

Day – 9: Shang Sumdo to Hemis to Leh 6 hrs.

Level: Easy
Today you descend towards Hemis Village where an ancient monastery is located. Hemis monastery is a wealthy monastery which organizes many social works in the region. You visit Hemis monastery to know more about the history and to quench your thirst of knowledge. There are some hidden practices that the monks practice to enhance their Aura and to meditate the Supreme. While returning to Leh hotel, you have an opportunity to visit Thiksey Monastery. This monastery has been filmed in many Hollywood and Bollywood documentaries. You find this monastery little bit crowded as you have lived a serene nature life for a week.

Day – 10: Markha Valley Expedition – Achieved

Post breakfast early morning transfer to airport and fly back to Destination with Sweet Memories of Ladakh.
